As a Software Quality Analyst at Saratoga, Ryan Roebeck’s main responsibility is to create automated tests for new features or systems within the technology solutions we provide to our clients. “Software Testing is an ever-changing field and thanks to this you’ll never have the same day twice”.
In his role, Ryan makes use of testing tools such as Selenium (UI testing) and Runscope (API testing) to automate integration tests. As a Software Quality Analyst, Ryan is crucial in ensuring solutions and systems are functioning correctly and are ready for release. He also often needs to conduct exploratory tests to test features and find possible new issues, working closely with the developers and project team to ensure problems are quickly resolved. “I love helping others, whether by trying to solve a problem or by helping the team release a quality product to the market. Ultimately, the most fulfilling part of my job is helping people by finding bugs that are hidden in the software.”
Tinkering with things to understand their inner workings is something Ryan has enjoyed doing since childhood, and is also what inspired him to pursue a career in the ICT industry. “As a child I would take things apart and put them back together in a new way, finding ways in which I could make improvements and modifications.”
As a Quality Analyst and Tester for a consulting company, you’re required to solve problems and identify issues across different industries using a wide range of technologies. Initially keeping up to date with so many technologies and software seemed impossible to Ryan, but he found a structured approach which has helped him in his work and skills development.
For Ryan, it’s helped to understand which industry in specific he finds meaningful to work in. “Mapping out the technology being used in that specific industry and keeping track of how its evolving helps identify which skills are relevant. You can then work on staying up to date with your skills and knowledge through seminars, online articles, online courses and by tapping into the Cape Town testing community.”
As part of a project team, the team environment and culture are important factors in creating a working environment which is positive and productive. This quote from Noah Mithrush, is a great example of the team environment Ryan strives to create: “Build the right environment. The team needs to feel that their voice is appreciated and that they have room to do cool things. Let them test their ideas, see what works and what could be improved, and make sure they know that they have the opportunity to do so.”
For Ryan, being a Saratogan means he is part of a great team that provides professional and unique solutions to many organisations around the world. “What makes Saratoga different is that the company has a clear mission and strong values which are evident in the daily lives of the Saratogans. We’re encouraged to actively participate in the workplace, celebrate individual and team wins, and most importantly we have leaders who are present and accessible.”
